Heroic crews halt fire from destroying subdivisionBoise officials said it could have been much, much worse. Wind- and heat-fueled flames ripped up a ridge to shake-roofed homes in Southeast Boise's Columbia Village area Monday night even as firefighters scrambled to get ahead of the fire. Ultimately, the flames took one life, destroyed 10 homes, damaged nine others and left a community reeling. First responders from Boise and throughout the Treasure Valley battled back the flames and saved lives by following rigorous training exercises and drilled procedure, city officials said Tuesday. But officials say things could have gone a bit more smoothly.
